4 benefits of a capsule wardrobe

In my opinion, if there is one thing you can do to create ease in your life it’s to build a capsule wardrobe collection.

Think about how long you spend trying to get ready in the morning. How many garments sit untouched in your wardrobe. How much money you spend on clothing that you rarely wear.

There are pros and cons of capsule wardrobes but when done well, they can have such a positive and powerful impact on your life. I live for my capsule wardrobe and know that so many of my gorgeous customers do too. If you’re considering a shift in how you think about your wardrobe, I’m going to explain the key benefits of a capsule wardrobe.

Capsule wardrobe 101

But first, what is a capsule wardrobe? It’s essentially a collection of garments that work together interchangeably to create different complete outfits and looks. Typically capsule wardrobe basics are neutral in colour to maximise the potential for mixing and matching outfits.

If you’re thinking about how to create a capsule wardrobe, it starts with looking at your lifestyle and building a collection that will support that.

A capsule wardrobe is really about doing more with less. Having less clothes doesn’t have to feel like you are missing out or that you aren’t stylish. In fact, quite the opposite is true.

Capsule wardrobe benefits

Why a capsule wardrobe? While there are many benefits of a capsule wardrobe, there are four that stand out the most to me.

1. Saves you time

How much time do you spend deciding what to wear every morning? Do you try on outfit after outfit trying to find the perfect combination of garments that work effortlessly together?

A capsule wardrobe stops that. Everything in a capsule wardrobe works together. Every pair of trousers pairs with every blouse. Every jacket goes with every dress. You can get up in the morning and spend very little time thinking about what to wear.

When I design my capsule collections, I do it with this in mind. All of the pieces in a capsule will work together. But they can also work back with items from previous collections. I think about how to make trans-seasonal dressing and winter layering easier and what busy women need from their clothes to make life easier.

2. Saves you money

How many times have you bought a blouse or a pair of trousers that sits unworn in your wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is purposeful. Rather than adding ad hoc pieces to your wardrobe, you instead choose pieces that all work together. That’s not to say that you can’t add a few statement pieces to your wardrobe. Or have an evening dress or two tucked away for those occasions.

A capsule wardrobe typically includes pieces that are higher quality. The cost per piece is higher but in the long run you spend far less money on clothes that you hardly or never wear.

3. Is better for the environment

Do you ever think about the impact of the clothes you buy on the environment? Not just the production of the garments but what happens to them when you no longer need them in your wardrobe?

Australians buy an average of 27kg of clothing each year. But they also discard 23kg of clothing to landfill. That’s quite a frightening statistic when you think about what that means for the environment.

One of the biggest differences between slow fashion vs fast fashion is the fabrics. Slow fashion prioritises the use of quality sustainable fabrics. Not only are these fabrics generally more durable so they will last longer in your wardrobe, they also create less environmental impact during production. A capsule wardrobe with quality sustainable fashion minimises your environmental footprint.

4. Gives you confidence

How does it make you feel when you never know what to wear? When you feel like you don’t have a clearly defined style?

So much of our wardrobe is about how our clothes make us feel. I design clothes to flatter so anyone who wears them feels as amazing as they look. When you feel amazing, you also feel more confident.

Defining your style is one of the first steps to creating a capsule wardrobe. When you then have clothes to support your style it gives you the confidence to step into your day knowing that you look and feel incredible.
